FAQs: What is Remedial Massage? Is it right for you?

If you’ve ever wondered whether remedial massage is right for you, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I’m asked.

Put simply, remedial massage is a form of manual therapy that aims to assess and treat muscles, tendons, fascia, and other soft tissues that may be contributing to pain, stiffness, or restricted movement. Whether you’re an athlete, performer, or someone managing the demands of everyday life, treatment is tailored to your individual needs and goals. My focus is on helping active individuals recover, move efficiently, and continue performing at their best. Or simply providing a tune-up to help keep your body feeling good and moving well.

How is remedial massage different from a relaxation massage? While both can leave you feeling better, they each have a different purpose.

 Remedial massage:

  • Takes an assessment-based approach, rather than following the same routine for every client.
  • Treatment is guided by your symptoms, movement patterns, training, work demands, and lifestyle factors.
  • Treatment techniques may include deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, stretching, or dry needling (where appropriate). Not applying as much pressure as possible!
  • The goal is to help reduce pain, improve movement, support recovery, and help you return to doing the things you enjoy.

What are the common reasons people book remedial massage? No two clients are the same, but some of the most common reasons people come in include:

  • Neck, jaw and shoulder tension, including the dreaded headache!
  • All forms of performance – from sport to dance – from training to performance and everything in between!
  • Workplace-related aches and postural discomfort
  • Improving mobility and supporting rehabilitation

Is remedial massage good for supporting athletes and performers? The demands placed on athletes and performers are unique. Training volume, repetitive movements, competition schedules, and performance requirements can place significant stress on the body.

Remedial massage can be used to support:

  • Recovery between training sessions and events promotes high levels of performance
  • Managing areas of muscular tension and restriction facilitating mobility and movement efficiency
  • Supporting the physical demands of repetitive movements

Whether you’re a runner, strength athlete, dancer, musician, or performer, treatment is tailored around your specific goals, workload, and movement demands.

I also believe massage works best as part of a bigger picture. When appropriate, combining hands-on treatment with exercise, strength training, or other allied health services often leads to the best long-term outcomes.

What should you expect at your first appointment? Your first appointment starts with a conversation. We’ll discuss what’s been going on, your medical history, your lifestyle, and what you’re hoping to achieve.

From there, I may perform a movement assessment to better understand what’s contributing to your symptoms before tailoring the treatment to suit you.

Throughout the session, pressure is adjusted to your comfort level and based on what your body responds to—not simply what feels strongest.

Before you leave, I’ll usually give you a few practical strategies to help maintain the benefits of treatment. This might include mobility exercises, movement advice, or small changes you can make to support your recovery between sessions.

Is remedial massage right for you? Whether you’re an office worker, tradie, weekend warrior, or competitive athlete, remedial massage can be a great option if you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, or simply want to keep moving well.

At the end of the day, my goal isn’t just to help you feel better for an hour—it’s to help you move better, recover well, and stay active doing the things you enjoy.

Or, as we like to say at Limbr… stay Limbr.
