What is clinical & reformer Pilates? Is it right for me?

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on core strength, flexibility, and mindful movement. The practice involves a series of controlled movements that can be performed on a mat or using equipment such as a reformer. With various forms of Pilates available, it can be challenging to determine which type best suits your needs. Two popular forms are clinical Pilates and reformer Pilates, both of which we offer at Limbr. Though they share a common foundation, their applications, goals, and execution methods differ significantly.

Clinical Pilates:

Clinical Pilates is a form of individually tailored Pilates mainly suited for rehabilitation, injury prevention and return to movement safely. It is often prescribed and supervised by physiotherapists or osteopaths who apply their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to ensure the most appropriate exercises are chosen.

What does my clinical Pilates journey look like at Limbr?  Before joining a clinical Pilates class, you will complete a thorough one-on-one assessment with an osteopath or physiotherapist. This session involves an extensive case history, goal setting, assessment of strengths and weaknesses, balance, and mobility. We aim to educate you on the findings, develop an appropriate home exercise program and formulate an exercise plan to help you achieve your goals. These initial appointments will last about 60 minutes. From here, you may be advised to complete more one-on-one Pilates sessions or to join a group class.

A) One-on-one classes: 45 minutes: These sessions allow you to have undivided attention to ensure your technique is correct, receive hands-on assistance, and easily apply program modifications. The one-on-one setting may be best suited to you if you are not familiar with Pilates equipment, lack confidence in your exercises, or feel you need constant supervision

B) Small group classes: 60 minutes: Our classes only have three or four clients. This small group size allows your physiotherapist or osteopath instructor to take you through your personalised program and ensure you receive ample attention and guidance to enhance the effectiveness and safety of your exercises. This setting allows for an enjoyable and social interaction, whilst enjoying the tailored programming and guidance of your instructor.

Reformer Pilates:

Whilst both clinical and reformer Pilates use the reformer bed, the structure of the class is significantly different. Group reformer Pilates involves a flow of exercises where all participants move through the class together. The goal of reformer Pilates is to focus on core strength, control, balance and mobility. These classes are run by qualified Pilates instructors who have completed an accredited Pilates course.

What does my reformer Pilates experience look like at Limbr?  Small group classes! Unlike most Reformer Pilates studios that have ten or more reformer beds, our classes at Limbr only have five! This smaller group setting allows our instructors to spend more time with each person, assessing form and providing hands-on corrections. The smaller setting means we welcome anyone regardless of age, ability, experience and strength. Our instructors can offer each individual progressions and regressions as needed. This ensures a safer and more effective workout while maintaining the social and motivating aspect of a group class. At Limbr, aside from focusing on core and pelvic strength, we have a large focus on enhancing your flexibility.

How do I join? You can call, book online through our website here or class pass, or pop into our clinic to lock in your first class. There is no need for an initial assessment.
